Dot NAME Domains

Set up in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to order john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level domain names remained operational.
